La Touché Family History Exhibition

Greystones Library recently launched its permanent Exhibition on the history of the La Touché family. Space in the library is limited and Poster Mania faced the challenge of making optimum use of the area available. The exhibit is located between two small half mezzanine walls and a full wall which incorporates a door leading to a store room.

Rather than reduce the floor space with free standing panels, it was decided to apply the information graphics direct to the wall using bespoke printed wallpaper. To achieve the flat area necessary the door architraves and skirting boards were removed. This also created the illusion of a secret door which is flush with the rest of the wall. This feature is in keeping with the time as secret doors are a popular feature in many period residences.

The digital wall covering manufacturing process begins with the design, usually provided in digital format, and it is from this that the wallpaper / graphic is printed. Special ‘wall paper’ paper is used in the process. As Poster Mania digitally print, it is possible for us to produce a short print–run of bespoke wallpaper which would not have been previously commercially viable. The paper is then hung by the traditional method of pasting the printed wallpaper fabric to the wall.

To create a finished look in the La Touche Exhibition, skirting board was re-fitted and a 3-d effect was created with the family portraits subsurface printed on 10mm shaped acrylic panels and raised off the walls with stud locators. This use of the walls for the story trail achieved the illusion of a bigger space overall.

Other elements of the exhibition include a scale model of the La Touché family home in Bellevue, Delgany. The model was built by Crowley Model Makers in Bray. It also includes two touch screen digital information pods which provide more in-depth information on the family. Poster Mania was commissioned to work on this project by our client Yellowstone who provided all the designs.
